In actuality, the protection is provided by neutralized carboxylic acids called carboxylates. It is worth noting that some people refer to these as “organic additive technology” (OAT) because the inhibitors which provide the corrosion protection are derived from carboxylic acids. These engine coolants have developed international popularity due to having an unsurpassed corrosion protection for extended time intervals. They also meet the European antifreeze requirements because they have no phosphates. Because full carboxylate coolants have no silicates, they meet the stringent requirements of the Asian specifications. This technology is also known as organic additive technology (OATs). Coolants from Asian OEMs can be a variety of colors including red, orange and green.Įxtended-life carboxylate-based coolants were developed to be globally acceptable and provide superior performance over existing technologies. They are distinct from the European hybrids due to the lack of silicates. To provide protection, most coolants contain a mix of carboxylates and inorganic inhibitors like phosphates. In Asia, problems with water pump seals and poor heat transfer have led to the ban of coolants containing silicate. European engine coolants exist in various colors typically each manufacturer requires a different color.Ĭaterpillar Engine with More Than 750,000 The mix of carboxylates and silicates is also called a hybrid technology because it is a mix of conventional inorganic technology and fully carboxylate or organic technology. Carboxylates provide corrosion protection by chemically interacting at the metallic corrosion sites, rather than by forming a layer of inhibitors that cover the total surface. To replace phosphates, conventional European coolants contain a mix of inorganic oxides like silicates and inhibitors called carboxylates. This could lead to loss of heat transfer or corrosion under the scale. Calcium and magnesium, minerals found in hard water, react with phosphate inhibitors to form calcium or magnesium phosphate, which typically leads to scale formation on hot engine surfaces. In Europe, problems with hard water minerals forced coolant technologies to be phosphate-free. Because these inhibitor systems are depleted by forming a protective layer, conventional green coolants need to be changed at regular biennial intervals, typically every two years.ĭiverse technologies have been developed to protect engines from corrosion. These inhibitors can be characterized chemically as inorganic oxides (silicates, phosphates, borates, etc.). Conventional inhibitors like silicates and phosphates work by forming a protective blanket that actually insulates the metals from the coolant. Currently, these green coolants typically use a phosphate/ silicate mix as the main components in their inhibitor system. Historically in North America, conventional engine coolants have been green in color. While these other ingredients make up only a small fraction of the coolant, they are what differentiate one coolant from another. In addition to the base fluid, there are a small amount of other ingredients including corrosion inhibitors, antifoams, dyes and other additives. In some circumstances, industrial engines may use other base fluids, such as additized water or a mixture of propylene glycol and water. Nearly all engines use coolants with similar base fluids: a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol and water. The addition of glycol slightly reduces the heat transfer of the water, but in most climates and applications, freeze protection is critical. While water provides the best heat transfer, glycol is also used in engine coolants to provide freeze protection. Overheating could result in accelerated deterioration of the oil and the engine itself. ![]() This heat removed by the coolant provides a balance in the removal of engine heat that is critical in ensuring that the engine operates properly. The remaining one-third of heat energy produced is taken away by the engine coolant. An additional one-third is removed as heat energy by the exhaust system. In a heavy-duty diesel engine, only one-third of the total energy produced works to propel the vehicle forward. It plays a critical role in sustaining engine heat balance by removing heat. Coolant (or antifreeze) protects your engine from freezing while defending components against corrosion. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Sometimes our best educated guesses don't even come close to representing what really happened so long ago."ĭr. "There is still a lot we don't know about why life is the way it is and how most biological process originated," said Dr. ![]() ![]() This means the photosystem must have evolved much faster at the beginning - something recent research suggests was due to the planet being hotter. Cardona used that slow rate of evolution to calculate the origin of photosynthesis, he came up with a date that was older than the earth itself. Photosystems are known to evolve very slowly - they have done so since cyanobacteria appeared at least 2.4 billion years ago. One surprising finding was that the evolution of the photosystem was not linear. "The result hints towards the possibility that oxygenic photosynthesis, the process that have produced all oxygen on earth, actually started at a very early stage in the evolutionary history of life - it helps solve one of the big controversies in biology today." "This is the first time that anyone has tried to time the evolution of the photosystems," said Dr. This means there must have been predecessors, such as early bacteria, that have since evolved to carry out anoxygenic photosynthesis instead. This is also long before cyanobacteria - microbes that were thought to be the first organisms to produce oxygen - existed. He found that the differences in the genes may have occurred more than 3.4 billion years ago - long before oxygen was thought to have first been produced on earth. Cardona could work out when oxidative photosynthesis first occurred. The core of the enzyme looks different in the two types of photosynthesis, and by studying how long ago the genes evolved to be different, Dr. Oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis both use an enzyme called Photosystem I. Instead of trying to detect oxygen in ancient rocks, which is what had been done previously, he looked deep inside the molecular machines that carry out photosynthesis - these are complex enzymes called photosystems. Cardona wanted to find out when oxygenic photosynthesis originated. However, the new study suggests that the origin of oxygenic photosynthesis may have been as much as a billion years earlier, which means complex life would have been able to evolve earlier too.ĭr. Previously, scientists believed that anoxygenic evolved long before oxygenic photosynthesis, and that the earth's atmosphere contained no oxygen until about 2.4 to 3 billion years ago. Anoxygenic photosynthesis use compounds like hydrogen sulfide or minerals like iron or arsenic instead of water, and it does not produce oxygen. Oxygenic photosynthesis uses light energy to split water molecules, releasing oxygen, electrons and protons. There are two types of photosynthesis: oxygenic and anoxygenic. Photosynthesis is the process that sustains complex life on earth - all of the oxygen on our planet comes from photosynthesis. What allowed microbes to escape the cradle where life arose and conquer every corner of this world, more than 3 billion years ago." "It may have been that the early availability of oxygen was what allowed microbes to diversify and dominate the world for billions of years. "My results mean that the process that sustains almost all life on earth today may have been doing so for a lot longer than we think," said Dr. ![]() It also suggests that the microorganisms we previously believed to be the first to produce oxygen - cyanobacteria - evolved later, and that simpler bacteria produced oxygen first. Tanai Cardona, says the research can help to solve the controversy around when organisms started producing oxygen - something that was vital to the evolution of life on earth. In a new article in Heliyon, a researcher from Imperial College London studied the molecular machines responsible for photosynthesis and found the process may have evolved as long as 3.6 billion years ago. Ancient microbes may have been producing oxygen through photosynthesis a billion years earlier than we thought, which means oxygen was available for living organisms very close to the origin of life on earth. ![]() ![]() Other standard features include cruise control, a strut tower bar (M/T only) for a stiffer chassis and better turn-in, and sporty design touches such as a rear spoiler, fog lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob with perforated leather, sport fabric on the seats and door panels and metal-finish trim throughout the interior, including metal pedals. Many ACX actors are members of the SAG-AFTRA union, and as members, they can accept no less than $250 per finished hour for audiobook projects. The cost to produce a professionally narrated audiobook depends on the length of your book, the service you use and the quality of the narrator. How much does professional narration cost? You pay the producer and receive your audio file. The narrator will record and upload the audiobook, which you will then approve. You and the narrator reach an agreement on how much they will get paid for each finished hour of the audiobook. You find a narrator (sometimes called producer) by listening to their auditions. You create an account at one of the audiobook publishers or production companies (I’ll walk you through some popular options below.).When hiring a professional narrator the process usually goes like this: Many authors choose to hire a professional to record their audiobook. Hiring a professional to record your audiobook It’s less common in fiction where the depth of characters and potential range of voice ages, accents, or dialects can become overwhelming and, perhaps, better suited for a professionally trained voice actor. It is most common for authors to perform their audiobook themselves in non-fiction where the voice the audience expects to hear is consistent with the author’s voice. TCK Publishing has an in-depth step by step guide on recording your own audiobook you can use for reference. So, for an audiobook of 70,000 words, you can budget an additional 20-30 hours of post-production work. This process will likely take 3-4 times the length of the fully recorded audiobook. You will also have to get the files ready for upload. It’s fair to budget about two times the length of the finished audiobook for total recording time to account for retakes, breaks during the session, and giving your voice some time to rest! How long will it take to edit your audio files?Īfter you have recorded your audiobook you will have to listen to the entire book and fix or re-record poor audio spots. If you apply this to your book, you can assume that a 70,000-word novel will be approximately 7.5 finished hours as an audiobook. How long will it take to read your book?Īudible uses 9,400 words per hour as the estimate for professional narrators. By far the biggest investment will be in the times it takes you to narrate your book and the time it takes you to edit your audio files in post-production. The equipment and software you need will likely cost less than $200. To narrate your own audiobook you will need a quiet place to record, equipment and software, time and some technical expertise.
